第二幕, Spence's after-school program, is an activity-based program open to students in Kindergarten through Grade 6. Classes include Gymnastics, 有创意的舞蹈, 陶器, 孩子的厨房, 国际象棋, 戏剧, 跆拳道, Stop Motion Animation, Junior Chorus and Comic Book Creations. 第二幕 classes are currently held on Zoom, Monday through Friday from 3:15-4:45 p.m. 第二幕 is a co-ed program and is open to Spence students and their siblings as well as children of Spence faculty and staff.

Instrumental Music 程序

Private lessons in piano, 小提琴, 中提琴, 大提琴, 长笛, 单簧管, 双簧管, 萨克斯风, 法国号, 小号, 长号, and percussion may be arranged through the school. All students are eligible to study piano and 字符串 instruments. 研究木管乐器, 黄铜, or percussion instruments, students must be in Grade 4 or above or have the approval of the teacher. Lessons in Theory/Musicianship and Composition are also available.

All instrumental music lessons will be scheduled in the 91st Street Building. Most lessons are scheduled after school; 中间 and 上学校 lessons may be scheduled during the school day if schedules permit. Additional fees apply for individual lessons, and financial aid is available. 

All students must have access to an instrument for practice outside of school. 为钢琴学生, please contact the Instrumental Music office if you would like information about renting or buying a piano. As needed, an electronic keyboard is an acceptable substitute for a piano. Rental or purchase of wind, 字符串, and percussion instruments may be discussed with the teacher involved.

Instrumental Music Groups

The Spence Ensemble, directed by Avigail Malachi, meets before school for students in Grades 3-5 who study a 字符串 or woodwind instrument either at Spence or outside the school and are ready for a beginning ensemble experience. A minimum of three students are required to form the ensemble, and each student must also be enrolled in private lessons inside or outside of Spence. Reading music at the appropriate level is necessary for participation in the group. There are no fees for participation.

The Spence Orchestra, directed by Greg Harrington, meets one morning before school each week and one Saturday each month for students in Grades 6–12 who study an instrument either at Spence or outside. Membership in the orchestra is open, 通过试镜, to students of intermediate and advanced levels who study 字符串s, 木管乐器, percussion or piano, can read music and are ready for an orchestral experience. There is no fee to participate in the orchestra at Spence. Please contact the Instrumental Music office for more information.
